OpenBSD as a Desktop

I have been enjoying watching @ninakalinina switch her primary workstation from MacOS to NetBSD. The various issues she’s hitting really remind me of the early days of Linux, and the (fun) frustration that comes with getting everything up and running. So, I decided to give it a shot, for fun. Unfortunately NetBSD has zero support for the wireless driver of the laptop I want to run (iwx), but OpenBSD did, so let’s see how it goes…

I dd’d the 7.9 install image to a USB key and booted. Going through the setup, it offered to let me set up wifi, but I didn’t have the firmware needed (and I couldn’t go online to let fw_update do its work), so I had to install from from the on-usb install media, then make a new usb key of vfat (not exfat) type, copy the firmware I needed from
